First of all, this website is awesome.

Secondly, what is this bug?! I know it's not exactly a centipede which are usually longer and have legs more uniform in length. This looks like something that once crawled over my foot and scared the living daylights out of me, except for the one I saw was greener and had a large pointed thing at its tail end. I've been trying to figure out what it is for forever!

That's a centipede, all right. There are several different families of them.

That's a centipede. The first poster is thinking of a millipede, perhaps. World of difference. Millipedes: slow, almost cute. Centipedes: Satan's spawn.

House centipede, which is actually an arachnid, related more to spiders, et cetera. And non-poisonous, and it eats other bugs!

Nope, not an arachnid. They're chilopods. Different class and subphylum.

They're also poisonous, though not really a danger except to other creepy-crawlies.

They're awful things, really. Yes, they're great pest control, but no deal! I draw the line at certain spiders. Eight long legs are enough.

I sit corrected, Jim!

I'm content to leave the house centipedes alone as long as they promise to never ever come in contact with my body. It would be a bonus if they'd stay still long enough for me to get a picture, but hey, I'll take their silent but effective bug eradication instead.

I hate these guys! Ick...too many times have I had one run over me. I just wish they'd stay still so I could focus long enough to whack them with a shoe!

Great photo! It's a House Centipede. I recently blogged about them at http://natureatcloserange.blogspot.com/2007/11/house-centipede.html The general consensus is that most people hate them! :)
