I've always loved these fellas. But I believe that they don't hatch the little ones form the back, it's a cover of loose skin where the hatchlings can hide from predators.
Peter- The eggs are laid and pushed into the mother's back. Her skin swells over them to keep them protected. They hatch there, morph into frogs, and burst out once they're ready to take care of themselves :)

I adore frogs and toads, and actually all amphibians, but the first time I saw footage of this toad unloading the kiddies, I had nightmares over it. I think it is more the holes in mum than the actual tykes lifting off from them. What happens if a couple of the tykes are a bit chubbier than the rest? Creepy.

I saw a video of this frog when I was about 9 or so and it freaked me out for years. All my brother would have to do is mention it and I'd start cringing and shuddering. BLECH!

Morgan, Jade, and Ida have all requested that I post this video. So enjoy this Surinam toad hatching toadlets from cavities in her back. Talk about back labor. You'll be itchy for a few hours.
