Quick correction: most sites got it wrong as first, it's a PC game. Wouldn't be surprised if it's the Shenmue Online project revived. Still, even the unlikeliness of us getting this it shows Sega still has *some* interest in Shenmue, even if they have a truly bizarre way of showing it.
From what I gather, it is based on a Yahoo! social network that started on mobile phones and expanded to the PC. I'll admit, I tried making a Japanese account with the service. I got really far, but was tripped up by them asking for a Japanese cel phone number.
Would you believe that blood type is REQUIRED for a JP Yahoo! account? It's true!

Ya, as dissapointing as this news is, any Shenmue news is good news I suppose, as that keeps the franchise in the spotlight and makes the possibility that Shenmue 3 could become a reality in the future.
Hell, if Duke Nukem Forever can get published and released 12 years after the project started, then why not Shenmue 3? I guess Duke won't be the longest running joke on gamers if nothing comes out of all this.

Shenmue is a story-driven epic centered around one main character (Ryo) and his personal quest, in an otherwise (fairly) realistic setting. When you take him and his storyline out of it, what are you left with? Play as a random person from Yokosuka or Dobuita or Hong Kong in 1986? How exactly does this line of thinking appeal to anyone? Do you take on the character of some random person somewhere in Asia also searching for Lan Di or avenging their father's death?
I love Shenmue to death, but I can't think of a worse direction for the series, aside from maybe a turn-based strategy title...."
