Superb piece of writing Oliver. I've been tempted to get a wheel in the past, but have always put it off as I couldn't decide between the different models. This clears things up nicely though.

Thanks Laurence! I hope this article clears up some myths about the wheels and informs anyone looking to make a purchase :D

I should also note that right after submitting this article, I found a webpage detailing a mod someone had made to the Sega Race Controller way back in the day to add pedal support. So I guess with some modding, the Race Controller can even support pedals, for those who prefer them!

Whoa, I love what you did with the colour changes and decals! How does one go about learning about waterslide decals?

I just got this wheel a week ago and modded it with Ben's De-Dead Zone board and it's taken it from really good to great. Waiting for a Vibration pack (minus the shell) to arrive to see how it feels in the VMU slot.

Couldn't believe how well Daytona 2001 plays with this wheel, hated it when I first played it on release but it's night and day with the wheel.

Shame Sega Rally 2 is still bad lol

Nice write up and rundown, Oliver!

My only experience with Dreamcast wheels have been the two MadCatz ones, the Dream Wheel and MC2. I eventually loved the MC2 after investing in an adjustable wheel stand (it's the only reasonably ergonomic way I can use them) and dousing the springs with WD40. Before that, it was the loudest and creakiest motherfucker. Works great now, though!

Great article and information.
I recently picked up a Pelican Rally 2 for a good price on eBay. I can only compare it to twenty year old memories of the Mad Catz wheel, but I am really enjoying. It has a dead zone, of course, but doesn’t seem too bad and I adjusted to it quickly.
It has built in vibration and a “game pad” mode to avoid conflicts with games that don’t support a wheel controller officially.
Seems to me to match up mostly with the official Sega Rally Wheel based on this article’s review.
Thank you for this and all of the Junkyard goodness.
