Excellent write up Brian! Surprised to see Blue Stinger at the top spot... But I suppose a lot of people do have a soft spot for the jank. And correction - you can legally drink in a British pub from the age of birth. Cheers!

Since I didn't get a Dreamcast at launch (I got one in early 2001, I think), I haven't actually played most of the launch line-up. It was a good mix, no doubt, and a surprising amount of racers.

Not long after I got my Dreamcast I got 'Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2' and was absolutely addicted. Treating a racing game like a fighting game was so cool, and not really done since.

Specifically to 'Hydro Thunder,' that is a game I've always wanted to like more, and have owned a couple of times, but it falls prey to many arcade conversions/ports: it gets unfairly difficult towards the end even though it isn't angling for more quarters anymore.

Thanks interesting although the most bizarre top 20 I’ve ever seen :).
Really surprising to find Blue stinger and trickstyle at the first places while i wouldn’t have selected them
This sounds typical an American top 20 with 2 NFL games and flag to flag cart racing :)
No shenmue, jet set radio, code Veronica, skies of Arcadia, marvel vs capcom, crazy taxi, virtual tennis, as if you tried to avoid the greatest games lol
This is actually cool that finally these titles have found big fans

No problem at all. Yep, this was for the 19 games released on September 9th, 1999 in North America (whether I enjoyed them or not). It might be fun to do something similar to celebrate European launch anniversary on October 14th but I'd be tempted to just talk about Toy Commander the whole time.

A top 20 all-time list would certainly look very, very different.

Well I think we were more lucky in Europe with Dynamite Cop (It was quite fun), Virtua Fighter 3 TB and Sega Rally 2 (despite the few negative feedback)..

Definitely. We had to wait a little longer for them but I loved all of those games.

It also seemed like they were in a similar boat as other arcade ports like Hydro Thunder and House of the Dead 2, which were also fairly underappreciated at the time. Back then, the critical discourse had somewhat soured on pure, no-frills arcade conversions, which had become fairly out of vogue unless they were substantially improved and/or padded with extra progression-based modes and content. And to be fair, mainstream gaming was still more of a monoculture back then as the industry was still struggling to establish/differentiate between the disparate spaces and audiences that could coexist within it (e.g. arcade and sim, AAA and indie, etc.). Of course, the lack of tiered pricing didn't help, either. When the same £40/$50 could buy either Sega Rally 2 or Gran Turismo 2, it was difficult to avoid making value a huge part of those comparisons.

Fortunately, today I think it's easier for us to look back on those games now and appreciate them for what they were rather than hold mainstream console gaming's evolving standards against them.

One issue with Flag to Flag is that in season mode the game is trying to simulate the results of the 1998 CART season. So the winner of the Race in 1998 is always the fastest car on track, this causes weird balancing issues as the game is always trying to get the cars in the proper order from 98
