Jayarava: the case of the murderer on the ferry who is tossed overboard to stop him slaughtering all the other passengers [I've never come across the source of this story, but it comes up with such regularity that I'm inclined to accept it as genuine].

It's in the Upāyakauśalya Sūtra, paragraphs 132-137 (Tatz, "Skill in Means Sūtra", pp73-4)
