Thanks for your two long comments - together they are almost as long as my original post (have you got your own blog?). I'm not going to publish them as what you wrote looks like a disorganised jumble of ideas to me - much of it the kind of Buddhist cant that I was deliberately avoiding on this occasion. You also seem not to have read my other work on this and miss the context I am speaking in. It might help you to understand where I'm coming from if you read the references I cite.

Perhaps you could think it over a bit and write something more succinct and organised in response?

From comments elsewhere it seems as though this rather speculative essay might have missed it's mark - I'm seen as writing in a reductionist way. The main problem from my point of view is that the essay is being seen as a standalone and is not being read in the context of the other things I have written on the self.

The speculative nature of the essay is not clear to some who think I am making a wholehearted attempt to say that this is how things are. Having trained as a scientist myself I am all too aware of the limitations of using scientific results in this way. The overall drift of my writing reveals that I am not interested in defining the existential situation in any absolute way - I don't think that's helpful. I'm consciously trying to avoid metaphysics - though that is far more difficult than it sounds.

What I'm looking for is a narrative rooted in my own world view, rather than the world view of an ancient Indian (or Tibetan, or Chinese...), which might explain the dilemma we find ourselves in, which motivates me to practice and leaves open the possibility of overcoming my difficulties. This is what Buddhists have done from the start. The only truth is that we need to do something - I don't believe in The Truth about Reality at least not as it can be expressed in writing.

So just quoting ancient Buddhist narrative (masquerading as doctrine) does not solve my problem, or contribute to the task at hand. Perhaps this will become more clear when part 2 comes out on Friday.
