The concepts of interconnectedness (and interpenetration) have a very interesting history in western (non-Christian) philosophy. One contemporary scholar has commented on the Stoic saying "A drop of penetrates the whole ocean," and concluded that "in Stoic physics, [there is] neither extremity nor beginning nor end but infinite extension, and there is no contact between bodies, only mixing and interpenetration." I'm not convinced of the connection :-)

How can there be no contact but interpenetration? That seems a flat contradiction. It seems to be drawing a lot from a short and cryptic phrase that could be made to say anything: the image reminds me more of Vedantic Hinduism for instance than of Huayen.

I'm busy at the mo so probably won't have time to follow up the reference, but others might enjoy it so thanks for posting it.
