Excellent explanation. I thought the "O god Manipe, save us" interpretation was particularly amusing. Reminds me of the "Goddess of Mercy" interpretation behind Gwan-Yin. :p

Yeah, my understanding of mantras was helped by a Shingon priest, who implied that the real purpose behind mantras was to awaken the mind, not to effect external magic. It helps awaken the mind, along with a proper execution of the related mudra and meditation, or so I understand it, but you probably already knew this.

There has always been a stream of practice in Buddhism which is aimed at protecting the person. This is simply pan-Indian religion I think, as it certainly predates Buddhism. The Buddha did try to get people to rethink protection and luck in terms of practising the Dharma but was obviously not entirely successful!
