I've just started reading your Lulu Visible Mantra book, which is astonishing and magnificent. I will try to make time to write a review on my blog.

I'm reading it out of order, browsing really, at first, and came across the printed version of this post.

A factoid that might be of some slight interest: according to the Tibetan oral tradition, the stobha in mantras are an attempt to disguise their meaning, to preserve (supposed) tantric secrecy.

I never found this plausible... It had all the earmarks of "folk grammatology." No significant obfuscation is accomplished, and metrical considerations are obviously more important

It is good to hear an explanation that makes more sense. Backchannel phatics are a plausible source.

Hi David

Thanks. It was always the book I wanted to read, rather than write. But no one else had done it, so I ended up doing it myself. That it came out OK (let alone astonishing) is very gratifying.

The stobha thing is of course a guess on my part, but as you say it is at least plausible.

Best Wishes
