I see that some centres (for instance Brighton, UK; Highlands, Scotland; Wellington, NZ) have already changed their websites to Friends of the Triratna Buddhist Order.

It's always amazed me that anyone could believe that The Friends was a monolithic homogeneous authoritarian organisation - it's more like herding cats and everyone doing their own thing.

Hello Jayarva!

This looks like a wonderful change for your order.

I wanted to make sure..I assume that the Western Buddhist Order is identical with the Friends of the Western Buddhist order. Is that correct?

I must have over 100 wonderful PDFs from FWBO, but I haven't studied them recently. You've piqued my interest to reinvestigate. :)

Best wishes,

Hi Steven,

Nope, not identical. In the old terms you have a core of committed people who have been ordained - the Order. Then you have an group of people, including members of the Order, who have some connection with the Order (hence 'Friends of the...') that puts on activities and runs centres and stuff like that.

Now the committed core is called the Triratna Buddhist Order; while the wider group is called the Triratna Buddhist Community.

I suspect that if FWBO and WBO were confusing to some people (and they apparently was) then the new arrangement has double the ambiguity because the difference between Order and Community is not immediately apparent.

Hope you enjoy your pdf readings

we have groups and centres in Eastern Europe and other places which might not think of themselves as 'Western': Turkey for instance!

From here in Turkey the Western doesn't look all that bad . . . though, as I'm not in any group, I don't know if folk would rather meditate under a Sanskrit banner.

For a while yet I still consider myself a Member of the Western Buddhist Order.

Thankyou for this info. I particularly appreciated the hints on pronunciation. Is it too early to try to add a reference to Triratna Buddhist Community on the wikepedia entry for Triratna at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Jewels ? Or other dictionary sites? I don't have such skills but others may have. In metta...

Hi Janette

Having written the original Wikipedia articles on the FWBO and Sangharakshita I quickly became disillusioned with the process. I try to avoid writing for Wikipedia now, though I take occasional pot shots in the comments. See the discussion of the FWBO page for the problem of changing that entry - though the name of the Order changed on 6th Jan (according to Sangharakshita anyway) we have yet to change any of our 'official' publications or websites, nor do we use the media to announce such things. We can't all agree that the name has changed yet either, so I'm not surprised that there is a certain amount of confusion out there.

So my blog post continues to be one of the only information sources and blogs are not considered reliable sources by Wikipedia - indeed as a member of the Order I am not a reliable source of information about the Order either.

Give it time. I'm sure someone will get around to it. All attempts to co-ordinate our web presence failed some years back, and it's been many years since the main website was even updated - a potential source of frustration if such things get to one. In fact fwbo.org is like one of those disastrous bloated government IT projects that always seem to tank, eat up resources, and destroy reputations without achieving any of their stated objectives. Sigh.

Jayarava, thank you for providing me with clarity on the name change. I was a little confused on this (as a Friend not an Order member) and couldn't get the information I needed from elsewhere (and as you say, www.fwbo.org is not as helpful as it might be!).

Ultimately a name is just a name after all, it should not change our practice, although I hope that it will in time give a greater sense of global Sangha.

With metta

I note that there is now a preliminary change to the fwbo.org website with a promise of more in December - six months hence. Fingers crossed.
