Yeah, interesting. For a while I've been curious about a sentence in the record of Huangbo, translated like this by Cleary:

The only reality is that "Bodhisattva" whose existence is totally unmanifested even in a spiritual sense—the Trackless One.

It's in paragraph 37 of part two, the "Wan Ling record" and has an index entry. Unfortunately this book does not include the original Chinese so I don't know how to investigate it.

My intuition tells me he is talking about an extremely "abstract" bodhisattva that is the same as Mind and has no distinct characteristics at all. Such a notion might be useful for rejecting conceptual thoughts and distinctions.

In paragraph 6 of part one, Huangbo says in response to someone asking about the "thirty-two characteristic signs of a buddha": (emphasis not mine)

Anything possessing ANY signs is illusory. It is by perceiving that all signs are no signs that you perceive the Tathagatha. "Buddha" and "sentient beings" are both your own false conceptions. It is because you do not know real Mind that you delude yourself with such objective concepts. If you will conceive of a Buddha, YOU WILL BE OBSTRUCTED BY THAT BUDDHA!!!
