Another way of reading this sutta is to see it as a set of "meta-instructions" for someone about to head out into the forest on her own for a long time. When one practices without guidance one can fall into quicksand without noticing it; here, the Buddha might be giving Gotamī a rule of thumb against which she can double-check whichever specific meditation practice she's doing and make sure she's not getting off track.

Part of the beauty and power of the Canon is the fact that the suttas are simultaneously vague enough to allow for quite varied interpretations, yet at the same time are precise enough that most of these interpretations will be fruitful to some degree.

Yes. Though if we take the text on face value Gotamī asks for and receives a brief teaching to reflect on. I agree that we can take the text the way you suggest, but I'm less convinced that that was the intention.
