Brave post, Jayarava, but you said it well. I'm sure there are some politicians who genuinely believe that they are trying to do the right thing, but unfortunately, this article highlights the problems we have with our governments here in the west (and it's not just the UK and US, they're all a bunch of bastards).

I've always said, a person who wants to become a politician is the person least suitable.

"Hopefully I won't feel compelled to write about politics for a long time to come."

It was timely and we shouldn't avoid the subject because we're Buddhists who avoid confrontation. At least we're allowed to be openly critical of it.

Perhaps I should emmigrate to New Zealand?

Hi Jason

Thanks. Should you emmigrate to NZ? I dunno. They're hit hard by recession right now I think. If NZ are less obnoxious on the world stage it is for the same reason that NZ is cleaner than most countries - there are too few of us to really mess things up, not because we are inherently better people.

Jayarava, I hope you will indeed go on blogging about politics. I think it important that Buddhists engage in the political arena. If we do not then we have no right to complain about what is done by those who are, after all, our representatives.

Of course politicians have mixed motives but I happen to believe, having met a few, that many do have some interest in doing the right thing. In any event, before dismissing what they do out of hand, I think we need to look carefully at what they say they are trying to achieve and consider whether we think this is justified.

And don't forget those marauding bands of ne'er-well-to-do New Zealanders seeking world domination. Why, rumour has it that one walks amongst us even as we speak!

Political posts always descend in to anarchy *sigh*.
