Hi Jayarava,
I agree with much of your critique of communication of evolution to the wider non-scientific world. It seems to me to be an uphill battle though given a component of salience which you didn't give much time to: practical utility.

The explorers that you mentioned, and those who followed and later RN, were dependent on an understanding of the world as spherical in order to navigate with any degree of precision. A spherical world (model) and the emerging technology of accurate clocks allowed much better estimates of westward and eastward displacement out of sight of land. This seemed to allow progressive entry to the wider world of practical use of the esoterica of earthly shape.

Once a spherical earth was accepted, making sense of planetary wanderings and stellar stolidity left the religieux with little alternative to the new cosmology.

Evolution, on the other hand, has very few practical touchpoints with society that are not visible to medical, biological, ecological or (sometimes) psychological specialists. There seems to be little practical leverage that will support communication, however well framed.

Thanks again for all your hard work in populating this blog. It is one of the high points of my intellectual and spiritual week.

Kind regards,
Simon Mundy
