Reading some of your older pieces I followed up a reference to Daniel Ingram. This guy knows what he's talking about. He notably never mentions rebirth. From a practice perspective I feel that the important point is not so much that rebirth is implausible as that it's irrelevant, or in your terms not salient.

Of course accepting this requires that one be interested in awakening and not in group-formation or intellectual Gleichschaltung.

Hey Swanditch

Exactly. It's my impression that none of these people who say they have experienced substantial insight experiences mention rebirth. Or do they?

Clearly some people do think rebirth has high salience: Thanissaro for example. Over at Reddit they think I'm Māra incarnate for publicly stating my doubts.

On the other hand I think practitioners benefit from having a supportive community. Some people have more than a little dust in their eyes or a little less aptitude than necessary, and can only participate in other ways. I know my limitations, I don't expect to awaken, but I hope I can contribute to the conditions that help my friends on their way.

This understanding that reason is actually underpinned by emotion seems important in framing how we communicate about anything. You rate Ingram highly, and other's don't. The facts are the same, so the difference probably relates to salience.

I don't rate Thanissaro all that highly, having had an opportunity to observe him at close quarters. Not a man of particularly deep insight.

I think I've committed wrong speech.

Swanditch... it takes all sorts. I'm not a man of particularly deep insight either.

Have just discovered this blog, and started working my way through some of your older posts - so sad to hear that you're winding this down... this really is one of the most inspirational, intelligent and educational blogs Ive ever come across on the internet (and I dont make a habit of passing compliments lightly!)
I teach psychology classes on belief systems and will be shamelessly plagiarising some of your quotes and references (translated into Estonian, since that's where I work currently).
Hope to post a more worthy respose when I have more time - but for now, thankyou sincerely for taking the time to write and post this.
Sometimes, just to speak IS action, in my humble opinion, since our thoughts create the world (or at least, as Korzybski pointed out, our cognitive map of it which is all we ever have).
With much love and best wishes,
tim chiswell
