Jayarava: I've enjoyed this series. Well done.

Re: individualism, I'm reminded of a presentation that I read a while back about the famous "Nordic model." It seeks to explain the success of Nordic countries, based on global indices of social well-being. In particular, the presenters argue that a "combination of extreme individualism and a strong state" is a key ingredient.

The principle here is that, at least outside of Anglo-American culture (and especially where I stand in the pseudo-libertarian USA), there is no necessary contradiction between "a strong emphasis on individual self-realization" and "a high degree of social trust" and harmony. In fact, there can even be synergy between the two.

I suppose it also helps if your society is as small and homogeneous as those of the Nordic countries, but I would like to believe that the model is more generalizable than that.
