Hi Jayarava,

I've been lurking around here for a few weeks and I've really enjoyed your writings, I'm a Buddhist practitioner in the Samatha tradition in the UK which seems to have a similar basis to the Tiratna order (correct me if I'm wrong!).
I appreciate this post because a friend of mine has expressed some rather 19th century social Darwinist ideas on occasion and I've never quite managed to craft convincing counter-arguments.
Thanks again!

Hi Charlie,

I don't know anything about the Samatha tradition so I can't say if our two movements are similar or not.

I think social Darwinism is particularly pernicious in the UK. The Tories embody a particular kind of dog eat dog world view, where welfare is "something for nothing", which is morally wrong (though inheriting wealth is fine). It also manifests as a kind of moral high-ground for anyone who has wealth - wealth is the reward for moral goodness, for evolutionary fitness. Which is partly why no real change has occurred as a result of the financial crisis - the rich are justified in their actions on the basis of being rich. Sadly Labour has become another branch of the NeoLiberal party that dominates the world. The whole notion of free markets is deeply, and wrongly, Darwinian in inspiration. It's survival of the fittest applied to economics and look at the social and economic chaos it has caused!

Margulian evolution is far more realistic and inspiring. She was personally quite fascinating as well. It's worth looking her up. Along with Lovelock she is one of the really great intellects of the 20th century. People to really admire for the way they lived their lives - without recourse to ideology (as far as I can tell), but in the service of truth and knowledge. I admire these people more than almost any Buddhist you could name.
