Thanks Terry. Taupo will always be magic in my mind, no matter what the humans are doing on the surface. There you have a sense of the depths of the earth, the beating heart - it's the steam, boiling mud pools, not springs etc I think. That and the earthquakes. Nature is undeniable there, and at times awesome in both the modern and old fashioned senses of the word.

A friends from NZ wrote to me....

"The coverage of his death in NZ has been extraordinary. I first heard the news at midday yesterday, and Radio NZ did a 1 hour special on him from noon to 1pm. It was the only item on tv3 news last night (apart from about 5 mins of sport). I don't have much to add, except we all seem to agree he was a truly great man. For a change, I watched the tv news and felt moved and inspired. We can't be so bad as a culture if we revere people like sir Ed. "
