Great explanation. I always learn something new when I visit your blog. :) I admit I knew mostly of Pali, Sanskrit and Chinese as the languages of choice in Buddhism, but clearly things are more complex. Also you got me curious about the possible Persian influences. :)

Yes I think popular Buddhism presents things in a relatively uncomplicated way. A sutra is seen as a unitary document, but things are seldom that simple, and most show considerable variation over time and space. The idea that there is, for instance "a" White Lotus Sutra is misleading. There are many translations, and one rather badly copied Sanskrit manuscript from the 14th century - some fragments exist as well. A sutra really is a thread rather than a point.

The idea that a text can change or be changed is clearly not in the interests of those who peddle the "Truth". So it is kept fairly quiet.
