Hi Gina

Yes sorry that one was a bit long wasn't it. I used to do word counts and keep it to 1000 words. Maybe I should start doing that again!

Thanks for reading and for your comments on my Flickr site :-)

Don't worry about word counts, this article rocked!!!

Interestingly though, you mentioned the eight practises ("His disciples undertake eight practises...") which, although similar to, are not the same as, the five (or 10 or however many) precepts that we are more familiar with (not killing/taking/lying/abusing sex/getting drunk etc). Where do these precepts originate from why do they not make more of an appearance (in this specific form) in modern Buddhism? They all look pretty sensible to me. Have they, over the years, been amalgamated in to the teachings and precepts we know and love today?

"Be that as it may our first task as Buddhists is not to become homeless and give away our possessions - the real meaning of going forth is a rigorous engagement with ethics, going forth from unwholesome acts of body, speech and mind; followed by serious, prolonged and determined reflection on the nature of experience and our responses to experience. If we are honestly doing this, then we will naturally be more inclined to renunciation, and not concerned with appearances."

I think this is a very important point. People definitely still get caught up in this idea that they just need to "simplify" their lives materially, and everything will just follow, which often isn't the case.

As for word counts, I think it's better to be well thought out than to keep things at a certain limit. Sometimes, things can be said in a few words, other times it needs more.

Hi Jason,

Thanks mate!

I think things like the precepts were ad hoc to start with and probably existed in many more versions than we have today - there are other sets of 8 and 10 as well as the familiar ones. I'm not sure what happened to favour the 5 and 10 that we use in the movement and the order.

Hi Nathan. Thanks to you too. Good point.

Word counts - I think it's harder to read a long article online, and the practice of writing to word count forces me to be concise and clear. But it's always nice to get positive comments.

Best wishes
