Couldn't agree more re: movie violence and the as you say bullshit idea that we "need" to have our noses rubbed in awful things. Dukkha will come no matter what we do - we don't need to wallow in it.

Thanks very much for this, very stimulating (in the right way that is!)we will be looking at 'sex in the Sangha' at our next council meeting and I'm concerned that many at the meeting look at sexual relationships between OM's and others from a 'power' standpoint. Thanks for stressing an alternative view. Sthiracitta

Hi Sthiracitta

Thanks. I still recall one of my university friends telling me that "all sex is rape, and all men are rapists". She was naive, but quite sincerely repeating something she'd 'learned' in her Women's Studies course. I found it deeply disturbing, but was at a loss to know how to participate in such a discussion. 25 years later I have a better idea!

Some of these ideologically driven views have made it to the popular level. We Buddhists do not help the situation by going on and on about how all desire is an aberration.

So yes I want to argue for allowing adults to be adults, for encouraging self responsibility. For not blaming teachers when relationships go wrong, but for every one to take responsibility for themselves.

Most of all within the sangha we need an environment in which confession is possible - which means a high level of kindness.
