Hello,

Thank you for writing a wonderful blog, I enjoy it very much.

You wrote, "Most people cannot be reasoned with, because neither people nor reason work the way they are popularly conceived to work. Those of us who want to make the world a better place must pay close attention to these issues of how people's minds actually work. If we want to convince people that we have a better solution it cannot be through facts alone. They must feel that what we say is salient in the context of their existing values."

This statement articulates a lot of my own experience regarding the topic. Have you read The Debunking Handbook? The authors suggest a strategy for displacing misinformation with more accurate information in the brains of us humans. I don't much care for the word 'debunking' because of its tone, but the information offerred seems useful.

It can be downloaded here: http://www.skepticalscience.com/Debunking-Handbook-now-freely-available-download.html

I'm interested in your take.

Regards,
Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks. I haven;t read the book you mention, and honestly I'm unlikely to. My reading list is long.

But the stats on information speak for themselves. Only about half of Brits believe in evolution in any form. Fully 25% prefer creationists narratives. Accuracy of information is for all intents irrelevant to the discussion of beliefs.

What's more I question the motives of most of the science evangelists. Whose purposes are they serving? It's the same old "White Men Know Best" bullshit, isn't it? I know that in the states there is an aggressive fundamentalist movement that wants to teach creation in schools. As long as such moves are blocked, there's no reason to seek to convert such people. Is there?
