Yes, I think you've definitely hit something here. I have always gotten the feeling reading the Sutras, that the message the Buddha (or Buddhists) were trying to convey was much less appealing than its popularity should allow. And by less appealing, I think I mean exactly that "dying to experience" that you talk about here. This is not something that would -- or should -- appeal to a mass of religieux, but it is -- to my mind -- exactly what the Buddhist project is about.

I also like your comments about reminding ourselves that we are investigating experience and not reality. I think that's the reason the Sabba Sutta has always been one of my favorites. The Buddha talks about "the all" in terms of the six sense bases and sense objects; namely, the entire domain of experience. He also says that anyone who tries to speak of things beyond this "all" would be unable to do so because it is "beyond range". This, to me, is a beautiful refutation of attempts to turn claims about experience into claims about reality.
