Thanks for the post - and the beautiful picture as well. I agree wholeheartedly. The problem is not only with Buddhist emphases. I've been thinking recently about how Western philosophy stresses mortality far more than natality.

Of course, having said that, passing away is not always gloomy (I was ill last week, it passed away... hooray!), and arising isn't always cheerful (I was not ill the week before last, illness arose... boo!). But to focus on passing away and not on arising is to risk seeing a world that is in the process of disappearing into nothing, and that can't be a good thing....
