"I was, undoubtedly, very liberal, despite my upbringing in Muslim society. Never read the sacred Islamic texts, I thought Islam was a rational and peaceful religion, glaringly disregarding all the horrible things Muslim were doing globally. I thought those terrorists, acting in the name of Islam, were misguided."

Wow. So, unless Sharia is actively being enforced in a nominally "Muslim" country, maybe the average "modern" or "moderate" Muslim is fairly ignorant as to what the ideology teaches/believes, and if it is being enforced, that same person is dead, in prison or too terrorized to speak out.

Geeze. I am liking the "One Law for All" campaign more and more. Liking Father Boutrous also. He seems to understand general ignorance of the masses.

I had no idea.

It is a fair point -- those who are unaware of the foundations of their cultures on both sides contribute to the Jihadists' recruitment success. Not every Muslim who reads Kahn's book will have the level of integrity and courage that has allowed him to look Islam in the face and flat-out reject it. That makes the ones who will even more important. Also, the book will give non-Muslim readers valuable insights on dealing with the Muslim mindset.

RO, not so much. They are taught that slaughtering 600-900 Jews who were attacked in unprovoked night raids is commendable behavior. Read about what Wafa Sultan was taught. They think that killing non-Muslims is ideal behavior. Mass murder is great. Rape, fantastic. Plunder: the world owes it to you. This is what they're taught. While we're learning history and government, they're learning the proper method for raping and beating one's 6-year-old niece/sex slave. They study all of this is in depth in Sharia states, all of them, to the exclusion of everything but math and language. MA Khan is from India, which is not a Sharia state. He still thought that murder, rape, etc. were commendable. Today most Mohammedans in India attend madrassas, so even they're little Bin Ladens.

He did touch on something interesting, which I've always wondered about, and that's the fact that Mohammedans are proud losers. They take pride in the fact that their ancestors were subjugated, that they were on the losing side of history. I always took pride in being Jewish for the very reason that my people kept our faith against all odds. We didn't care what people thought of us and we didn't stop being who we were for a more comfortable life, even if it meant being essentially forced out of 2, and now 3 countries. I also think that the Copts and the Hindus are amazing for this reason. Mohammedans are proud losers.

So, are they taught it or aren't they? Khan seems to say that lots of them are not, or that they believe that all the viciousness that is past and today's Islam is all about "peace" - except for the "radicals" who really have no basis for claiming it is Islam that "makes them do it."

I really have no basis to know, except what I read. Sultan and Darwesh and Gabriel all have different life stories about what they "knew" about Islam, based on their family background and societal situation.

Maybe there are populations that are more or less ignorant. I am not excusing any of it, by the way, Jdamn13. I only hope the book can help school some of the ignorant - like the Coptic priest seems to be able to do. To what ultimate effect, I don't know.

However, if they are not ignorant, and are just silent supporters, the book won't make any diff in that world. Maybe it will help the cause in the west?

revereridesagain,

Also given the fact that he was a former Muslim, it will make it harder for non Muslims to accuse him of just being a bigot.

They're taught it, RO. He's from India, and he's older. Islam wasn't so Islamic 30 or even 20 years ago. If you had told Mohammedan women 30 years ago that they would all be wearing slave rags or refusing to roll up their sleeves in a hospital setting they wouldn't have believed you. That's why older Muslims aren't so crazy and why Ali SIna grew up with all kindsof humanistic misconceptions about Islam. Islam isn't like that anymoe. It's radical where it never was, in Indonesia, Turkey, Russia, etc. That's why it's taken over so much of Africa over the last 30 years. Petrodollars.

If you want to see what Mohammedan kids are taught in school, cehck out what they're taught in school:

OK - so it is more of a generational thing. That makes sense - Gabriel talks about, say "foot baths" that no Muslims ever used when she was growing up.

Thanks.
