Well, I don't think it's only hypocrisy: they really think that their faith makes them superior, so any change of faith / attempt of, is considered as a challenge, because there are people who, even after knowing their faith, change it. It is also something that proves free will, something that "submission" doesn't relate well with.
The difference is that Western nations don't see themselves as superior even if they have reached the higher standards of culture, education, freedom and well-being.
