I've never in my whole life met two people who have defined democracy in anything like the same terms or sense. So, what does "democracy" mean to Egyptians when they say it? To me it comes across as something similar to Obama-speech, "hope-'n'-change." Sure, we might well smile and be for it, if only we knew what we were for, not to mention what the promoter means by what we think we might mean. Who'd know?

Notice, though, that democracy soon fades from the conversation, and the uptake is Death to America, Death to Israel. That's probably all we can expect from Egyptian democrats: blame the other guy for the personal failings of Muslims. "Democracy is a meaningless term, I think, to most people, and especially to those who don't get individualism. Collectivist democracy? I don't get that part. I think it means that the Muslims of Egypt have no idea what they want and don't think anything should change other than that they should all have what Israelis have, so long as the Israelis lose it and the Muslims get it without having to make any changes in their personal lives and attitudes toward the world. It could just as well be a demand for bee-hive hair-dos for all it matters.

Egypt is a mess because the people are a mess. If they won't become democrats, then democracy is bullshit.
