From CBS: BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) – Hazmat crews descend on Scott Air Force Base after a suspicious package sends three to the hospital and prompt evacuations of several facilities on the base.
“Currently we’re responding to a suspicious package that occurred at the official mail center (Building 1650),” SAFB spokesman Lt. Benjamin Garland tells KMOX News.
He said they’re not releasing any further information about the “suspicious package” or what it may have contained at this time. However the package reportedly emitted a sulphur-like smell.
Garland says at least 3 people have been transported to the hospital and up to 17 others are going through the decontamination process. The hospitalized people were likely the package handlers and they showed no symptoms other than a rash.
The incident began just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The education center, the bowling alley and ITT center at Scott are closed until further notice.
