I would definitely be going crazy if my kids were out of school for 12 days! Christmas break felt long to me this year, though I enjoyed the lack of structure and the sleeping in part of it.
absolutely i would be going crazy, and absolutely i would have fallen victim at the american girls store! i can't wait till my girls are old enough to really want one (and i'm considering planning a trip this spring to chicago to go the american girls store there just because I want to go :)
I tried to talk my sister-in-laws into makeing a girls NY trip just for Broadway and the American Girl place. Sadly, it was a no go, and I am not brave enough to do it alone. I would be in heaven in the AG place, I now have one you know. Sweet Meg, and she deserves a facial.
I'll put Serendipity and Dylans on my dream list and keep working on my sister-in-laws, hopefully they read your post!

I thought American Girl was a wrought until I took my daughter there for lunch on her 5th birthday. There aren't many places our little girls can be little girls and it sure is fun for us big girls too. I thought the hair salon was fascinating!
Yes, 12 days is a little long, but if it is possible just make it marvelously memorable -- which I am sure that you do. I would love to go to NY with you and visit the "places" that are so much fun for you. A facial for a doll? Absolutely if it does the trick in getting the ink off. I love those dolls, but so far have not taken the time to make any clothes for mine -- do you buy clothes for the dolls there? Such fun to have the girls love to play with their dolls. Glad to read your blog once again.
You were a little crazy not to stay in town for the Inauguration-- I would have loved to be there on such a historic day.
I love how you make everything so magical. You make the things I do every day seem like such an adventure (I live very close to Serendipity and Dylan's Candy Bar, and Bloomingdales-- which is much more of a temptation for me). But who would think catching a cab would be so exciting? I was 19 when I hailed my first cab. But I think my baby wins the prize for hailing a cab when he was 3 months old. His uncle was holding him, and thought it would be a cute picture.
American Girl Doll store? That looks amazing, I think i'd still be way entertained if I went there today!! Be glad you caved into the American Doll scene though, my parents never did & I'm still bitter :)
We were in town and didn't go! To take the kiddos all to that mad house would have been asking for one of them to get seriously lost. We enjoyed watching it in the comfort of our warm home! And patted ourselves on the back for how smart we were when we heard that 30 families got separated and 12 where still missing 2 days later!!
We had an extra week for our Christmas break because of snow! Our city shuts down as we are not use to such craziness. It was great for the first 2 weeks... So fun that your girls can get a cab and still have fun at the doll store! Love that!

These memories will be worth while in their impressionable brains and hearts...You did superb. I love the adventure and all the fun you had and the best part is that they will cherrish it and remember it for years to come. Love dolls and never heard of having facials done to them, but how FUN!

We are on day 4 out of school + the impending weekend. BUT, I'm loving it this time bc we just moved back into our house and the kids are out playing in the snow with the neighbors all day -- like I've hardly seen the 2 older ones. So, THIS time I don't have issue with the school closure. And, yes, we've had our doll's hair done. I was probably 30 when I hailed my first cab...maybe older. I personally don't see the big deal with inaugerations - you can see exactly the same thing at home (and in the comfort of warmth). It's like a professional football game- you can watch it better at home on tv. I wouldn't sweat it.
Your comment about the starving children and doll facials made me laugh out loud.
A little indulgence now and then is fun. If they were getting weekly manicures, I might worry.
Also, I just have to say, after looking at the picture of you and your girls outside the candy store, you are just an All-American beauty, Kristi. Really!

My kids have now been home for 12 days from school (funny how the last day they were at school is the last day I posted) and I am going totally crazy. Between being sick, Martin Luther King, Inauguration Day (did everyone get that off?) Curriculum day, Snow Day and today's Ice Day (a sheet of ice got put on our town last night) we have all had the opportunity to spend a lot of time together in our snuggly little, little space.

We went out of town for Martin Luther King/Inauguration weekend to Connecticut. Oh my it was like winter wonderland. We are thrilled to have family move into such a darling quaint town just an hour outside of New York City - but even more excited to have family close![Image] Our weekend was spent relaxing, sledding, laughing our heads off and just finding pure joy in watching our kids play together. I hardly took any photos, shocker. But that is always a good sign that I was having way too much fun. [Image]On our way out of town we stopped through New York City to spend a few hours. Man that place is expensive. We figure we were there almost 4 hours and spent about $100 an hour. Parking was $50! After spending a week in NYC this summer my kids just love that place and talk about it all the time. Caroline got to get her first cab and did a great job. [Image]The cab driver was so nice and he leaned out of the car and said, "Hey do you want this cab?" She was thrilled with her skills and we had him take us to Serendipity 3 for lunch.[Image]Part of our short stint was spent in the American Girl doll store. As one who has spent much time complaining about how over indulgent these dolls and store is - I now humbly say I love it. My girls play with their dolls all the time. And in this day and age when you have a 10 year old girl who loves to play dolls as much as basketball you are happy to encourage both. Caroline and Annie Kate both got new dolls from Santa. (Santa bought them used from a friend down the street) Their hair was a bit messy, so Caroline got to get her dolls hair done and now it is nice an smooth. [Image]i love this photo of her grinning as she sat there and watched her get a new do (I even paid $5.00 for a facial and teeth brushing - that is kind of embarrassing to admit, in my defense a friend had put make up all over it and it was able to all come off)[Image]Ok so if you think the facial is embarrassing to admit, Annie Kate got her dolls ears pierced. We found out they started that last fall and she has been dying to get her dolls ears done. Since I have not let her get her own ears pierced, this was even more exciting for her. Seriously kids are starving in our own country and my kids dolls are getting facials.
[Image]We then made a stop at our favorite candy store, Dylan's Candy Bar. Oh they just have so much fun in there. They walked in there like they owned the joint.[Image]We drove out of town on 39th street in the garment district. It is fabric store after fabric store. I was begging Jeff to stop or at least slow down but we were racing out of town to the Lincoln Tunnel to beat the traffic.
[Image]Oh it pained me to discover all those stores and have to drive on by, but we didn't have a "stitch" of traffic and just had a great trip. I am feeling a little remorse for not being here for the Inauguration but have to remind myself that if I would have gone I would have had to take all the kids by myself and be down there in the cold. (If in town Jeff would have had to be at work, as the hospital was all on call that day on watch for any type of mass causality)[Image]I did go downtown a few days before just to take photos of the pre-excitement (you can see more photos here)

oh man, i WISH our kids would get a "snow" day every once and a while! but twelve days...ya, that's a little much.

I like it when my boys are out of school because they help me with Eva! It's different when they're sick, though. Then I want them to go back.
I can't decide which looks more enticing, New York or Connecticut! Lucky you got to do both.
I love the photo of Caroline hailing a cab, I'm sure I was well into my 20s before I ever did that.
