Up until now, all of the "david v goliath" comparisons of Israel I have seen have been to make Israel look like the struggling underdog trying to survive in a harsh world of hate and no smypathy. The helpless david fighting the goliath of "muslim hate" of "anti-semitism" and all that nonsense.
I don't think bob meant it that way. But, certainly - I see your point, which is an excellent one.
Israel has something like the fifth strongest military in the world. That's no david!
But, in the context of basketball, and other things, like their economy for example - they just can't compare to most other nations.
Also, I posted an outstanding video that clearly demonstrates that Palestinians are the David of this day and age and Israel the Goliath, with all the trappings that come with that religious analogy.
I recommend that everyone sees it.

I learned recently that Israel's sports teams play in the European league. Odd, isn't it, since Israel is certainly not in Europe.
Not only that, Tel Aviv's professional basketball team has aspirations to the big time . . . Maccabi Tel Aviv has always been driven by a ravenous hunger for success. That's why it has won 36 of the last 37 Premier League championships, and that's why it signed 12 senior players this summer, ignoring their desire for court time and the danger of creating frustration and tension throughout the roster. The club's hunger is also what has led it on a globetrotting pre-season tour at a time when it should be training prior to its opening Euroleague game against Malaga next Thursday. Tel Aviv's team is travelling to the U.S. to take on the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers in a pointless pre-season game, a move Maccabi's management says will "help promote its international branding."
The twelve "senior players" mentioned above all are former NBA players, presumably hired to help defend Cleveland's superstar Lebron James. But the tour has come under fire. Center Nikola Vujcic called the club's participation in the pre-season NBA Live tournament stupid, and the coaching staff has said at every opportunity that the circus tour against NBA teams is not helping the team gel.But Israel has never been very good at making things "gel", has it!
What an odd little country - always wanting to play out of its league.
Who else exhibits that same national psychology of grandiosity coupled with insecurity?

Others have expressed the opinion that Israel is a sort of anglosaxon, imperialist copycat.
Who knows?
If that's the case that would confirm my earlier guess that Israel is expendable and will do its own dirty work against Iran and Syria.
