Remember when the Japanese people were "saving too much" and economists were moaning about Japan's "dismal economy?" The Japanese government actually had to give out vouchers to encourage Japanese to go shopping!

If Americans had the discipline to organize and do car-pooling/car-sharing, to set up more second hand exchange of goods, and community farming, and cancelling of cable TV and boycott of mass entertainment, we could actually save money (to store as precious metals) and make the corporations miserable.

It's not impossible. 70% of the US economy is consumer spending. If Americans were angry enough, and put 2+2 together to understand that not downsizing their lifestyles and working together for localized economies that exclude large corporations, we could slice a bloody, painful chunk out of the corporations.

Of course this is going to happen anyway, but it's going to happen as a result of people being broke and homeless. Too bad. If Americans had the foresight to set up localized economies NOW, it would be a lot less painful (for us) LATER.

I'm also afraid the rich will escape many of the consequences by finding new markets in other countries, and by physically fleeing the US. But we should try to save ourselves no matter what.
