The Internet. Sounds vast, doesn't it? Well... it is.
But it is as dull and boring as the electrical grid or telephone long lines (sorry 'Wichita Linesman'). The Internet is the collection of wires, cables and antennae that give you access to the global network. It allows you to connect to computers all over the planet. Somewhat exciting, but no more so than a phone line let's you call your grandmother in Seoul or a cable that brings you the television networks from New York.
What you're excited about is the sound of your grandma's voice and the appearance of your favorite actress on a weekly series. That's called content, programming if you will. It is what you watch on the network. It isn't the network itself.
So what does The Internet give you? It connects you to the World Wide Web (the "Web"). That is all the information in the world, all the time and, theoretically, available to all. It's a big vision, but there it is. Vast.
Next time you want to tell a friend about something interesting you read or watched, tell her or him that you saw it on the Web.
