Nice writeup. Couple good points. Some poorer ones. The first bit can be summed up as:

"Everything should be as simple as possible, but no simpler." (and bonus points for finding the reference.)

Only thing is, at least in this field there's a strong economic incentive to not do that, but instead layer on layer upon layer of complexity to polish up the turd so it looks simple, "intuitive" even. This, of course, is a fallacy.

But the incentive remains. Even in the FOSS world where, taking dependencies as a stand-in for complexity for this argument, for example the "improved" "successor" to Xlib, Xcb, written in nothing but C, comes with python dependencies. Or the (C) Xorg hardware drivers that depend on perl, or dbus (and python), which is backwards. And those are fairly simple examples; for worse horror stories, look at gnome software like gnumeric. I recall someone feeding the dependency graph through graphviz, and, well, it was impressive, in a bad way.

I regularly run into people, especially developers, who don't understand why senseless dependencies are a bad thing. They appear to think disk, memory, and cpu are essentially free. Follow that through and you'll see why "attracting complexity" is viciously the same in commercial and F&OS software both.

Even in /free/ software there is a strong incentive to "re-use" previous software regardless of how useful that is. Free features are free, no?

I think your copying argument is a bit off the mark. Consider a FOSS network monitoring app implemented in, I kid you not, over half a dozen different languages and needing a comparably complex constellation of libraries. That's software built from scratch to scratch a custom itch, not copy an existing app already in the market.

So the problem isn't straight up history, it's also social dynamics as well as economics and how software marketing works.

Neither does FOSS have an automatic monopoly on simplicity. Compare, oh, Steve Jobs iThings like the iPhone. Turns out the guy is a Zen master, and understands Design very well. That's both what to put in, and --often overlooked-- what to leave out. If you study his choices, knowing this, you might see what he did and why he did it. What you're after is doing that to software.

Personally I don't think you need a dramatic statement. Indeed, it's a fairly risky proposition because it might attract all sorts of crud, like from enthousiastic but ill-informed people. That one sentence up above ought to be all you need, once you know what it means.

My dad used to quote "In der Beschraenkung zeigt sich der Meister", but translating that as "less is more" is indeed making it /too/ simple. Though "less is more" is true on its own, it does mean something different.

Took me years to really understand what that bit of german said, for I thought it implied I had to limit myself, or it put hard limits on what I could do. I hate limits! But that's not what it is about at all.

Because understanding this is already quite the achievement, I do not believe you can meaningfully ask "common people" to push or even demand specific changes. Jobs certainly doesn't ask his fanbois how they'd like it. All you can do is tackle problems one by one, reduce them to their essence, and bring your solutions to the market.

Apple does, and I wish there were more that can because there isn't only one way, but theirs is currently the only well-designed one available.

Even then there's no guarantee it'll catch on: Like how the pipe is the source of most of Unix' magic, yet it isn't a mainstream system. Instead, the most mediocre eyecandy is the biggest. In fact, linux is a fairly poor thing as unices go, yet it is highly popular.

[stupid message limit]

While I think you're on to something, FOSS vs. commercial is orthogonal to this, and you can't ask the common man for meaningful input yet, maybe never. But you can learn from his struggle, solve his problems, and offer a better product, regardless of whether you use old or new hardware to do it. So I think the second part of your piece needs some more thinking on.

For the most part, I agree with you. However you seem to be very careful not to touch a sensitive fact: people compare the features of the products, find the ones that satisfy what they think they want, and then buy the cheapest shit they can find.

This means that manufacturers can't use that much quality components, and must also keep other costs down. Who knows, maybe they try to avoid prototyping costs by not making too many of them? R&D is really freaking expensive, and it doesn't generate any immediate income. Or maybe they slip on testing. Anyway, the point is that consumers get what they are willing to pay for.

For a second, let's compare smartphones to industrial electronics. Here the customer -- the factory -- wants lasting products because an unscheduled stop in production could cost millions. Also, a bug may result in costly damage to hardware, personal injury or eved death.

In these cases the supplier is expected to provide stuff that works in a safe manner. To make sure things work right they might make a service agreement, and this is where things get interesting: the product *not* falling apart is *free money* for the manufacturer! What an incentive!

But how many consumers would agree to such a service plan? After all, it would involve running costs.

As to overcomplexication of software, I think it may be even worse than you think. Digital oscilloscopes used to have relatively simple software that did just what it was supposed to. Nowadays, there's a lot of o'scopes and other measurement devices out there that take ages to start up, because they start up Windows first.

Yes, Windows. Combine this with LAN and USB connectivity, and with people who are used to being careless when using such devices. You have a security threat you never saw coming.
