This was definitely scary as shit as a kid. I never knew about the alternate cover... I agree, making the ghosts scared diminishes the effect. Can't wait to share this tome with my nephew in a few years! Of course, by then books won't exist and all media will be consumed through tablet and all media will consist of Miley Cyrus twerking.

Oh my god, this book scared me so much as a little kid. Though I do agree with you on the "In a dark dark room" story, I will say that as a 5-year old, it did really scare me. Probably because it was basically a jump-scare.

Thanks for reading, Isabella! You are correct; I definitely was scared by the "In a Dark, Dark Room" ghost as a child, and dreaded turning to that page, so you have a very good point. As an adult, though, the ghost just kind of looks like a jaundiced Howard Stern to me.

Wasn't even aware that Schwartz put out another series of scary story books for children like this!

The Green Ribbon sounds to be directly inspired by Washington Irving's "The Adventure of the German Student", which I first came across via an adaption in an issue of Creepy.

Actually, there is a VERY faint outline of the Pirate over the right curtain. However, it is nigh impossible to make out.
