@*phlebiac*:
I'm not sure savegames will still work. Your progress in the chapters will be saved, but he savegames may not be compatible.

@eraser:
Someone was working on it, unfortunately, no news so far. Looks like he's overbooked.

Savegames on any level that you recompiled will not work for sure. So, on each level that had some fixes or tweaks - savegames will be lost.

Good thing that chapter progress data is stored externally.

Does a upcoming update contain a German translation?

Oh, it was so easy when GLaDOS stopped atacking... ^^

October 27, 2008 at 4:21 PM

Great!
So I wasn't the only one thinking that GLaDOS kills too much easily... :P

Will I be able to have both versions installed at the same time? I'd like to compare them (and I like the current radio song! :P)

Since the whole Half-Life story takes place in Europe, why is it considered a mistake for Erik to talk about € instead of $ ?

October 27, 2008 at 7:49 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Half-Life 1 is set in America.

October 27, 2008 at 8:12 PM

I forgot to say that even HL2 takes place in EASTERN Europe. They don't use €uros there.

October 27, 2008 at 8:15 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can't believe it!
Hungarian translation? Wohooo! :D
But I think changing euros to dollars is a stupid idea. Erik has an german (or european) accent, so why he will talk about dollars instead of euros? :S

what about polish translation ?

October 27, 2008 at 8:49 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

how do you know that aperture science is in Europe? in the whole half life series they are almost no European accented people even though the game gives varies clues, some just so obvious but not in portal, only that GLaDOS speaks with no accent that would match any European i know of.

I think that the currency talked about should be whatever currency is most used by the people who speak whatever translation is active. That way, everyone's happy.

I think I could contribute german subtitles... but I don't know the Source SDK yet. How difficult is the creation of those [technical aspect]?
The translation itself [of the English subs] wouldn't be that problem.

Aperture Science is an American company. It's a fact, because it is competing with Black Mesa for governement's funds and are in relation with Eisenhower.

I referred to Nicolas' first comment here [Looks like he's overbooked.], so if we don't see german subs with v1.2, my offer still holds. :o)
[To put some competition in it: I study Translation (BA) in the 5th semester, what should somehow qualify me. ;o)]

Nicolas, i congratulate your effort to make the game better for most of the players

I want to say that i don´t see an excess of turrets fights in the game.

To say the truth, the turret´s fights were the best and more creative challenges for me.

I am not criticizing this change of the turrets, i only want to say that those were cool for me as i could win those parts.

@André:
I just moved one of the turrets back, so it's easier to start the room.

October 28, 2008 at 5:35 PM

I have an idea of what the answer will be, but I just played through the game with the commentary enabled and heard how much you had to remove from the GlaDoS section of the map. Honestly, I would love to see all these different rooms you had initially put into the game because it sounds like a lot of work went towards it.

Would you even plan on splitting that challenge into 2 sections? I know I wouldn't mind having to wait for the game to load in exchange for more content.

Even if you don't add this during this coming update, I think it would be nice to at least consider it for a later update.

October 28, 2008 at 8:35 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jeah nice idea: split up to a easy-normal "portal like" challenge and a hard-difficult challenge.

The game would be bigger but today nearly everyone has enough dsl speed and enough hard disk space XD....

They're not listed, but I think the dutch translations will also be included in the update, at least I send them ;)

October 29, 2008 at 3:22 PM

It will be included yes, don't worry, this change log is already outdated.

@Sigma: I think they will be /pleased/ that the things they complained about have been fixed, they wouldn't complain about a game if they didn't think it was an actual problem*, especially if a significant number of people comment on the same aspects over and over again, it's not a coincidence.

personally i agree w/ the comic jack posted in his comment. the difference between portal and prelude is that in prelude your almost required to die in order to understand what you have to do to complete the chambers. not saying i didnt enjoy it, i did, theres just a lot of turrets! in the official portal when GlaDOS talks about android hell,,,is prelude android hell? lol jk

I was reading a comment on the deleted content in the post-test area. You said in the commentary that it brought the system beyond its limits.

Perhaps you could make the elevator 1-way the first time, and put a load in it. That way, you could re-add all the extra Aperture Science bits. Then, when you ride the lift down, the load adds in GLaDOS and all the service tunnels, and removes the extra material in the area before (via locking of the exit door).

Just my opinion. For all we know, you might have permanently deleted that info, but lets hope you kept some backups.

Nice post.I can't see machines taking over the jobs of human translators in the near future, as they have done with so many other professions (remember telephone operators?)
These machine translators are ok when all u need is a quick understanding of a some rather simple text, but if you are running a business, or otherwise depend on accuracy of a translation, using professional translation services is the only way to go.
