I wrote The American Lawyer story about Denise Woo, and just wanted to correct one assumption you made. Denise's O'Melveny lawyers were not unstinting in the help they gave me, not because they didn't want to be but because they couldn't reveal anything deemed classified by the government. And the government cast an enormous cloak over just about everything in this case.

Specifically, I didn't learn Jeff Wang's identity through anyone at O'Melveny. Nor did O'Melveny give me the name of a single FBI agent in this case nor a single prosecutor who knew Denise when she was an agent. I wish reporting this story had been as easy as getting a list of sources provided by defense counsel, but it was not. And since the O'Melveny lawyers could be considered in violation of court orders if they'd helped as much as you assumed, I thought you'd want to correct the record.

Otherwise, thanks for helping to spread the word about this very disturbing case.

The presiding judge will rule on the misdemeanor settlement agreed upon by Denise Woo and the government on October 23. Expect the parties to comment more fully after that ruling.

On October 30 Ms. Woo's plea bargain was approved and was was sentenced to probation. Her life can finally return to some sembalance of normality. Those of us that know her know that she has suffered for these past seven years and we're all happy for her.

Being a 2nd generation Chinese-American who works in the defense industry, I find this behavior by the FBI to be totally jacked up.

There is absolutely no excuse whatsoever for Ms. WOO to tip off a suspect. She is a FBI agent, for Pete's sake! It would be a disaster if half of the FBI agents act like her. What made her think she was absolutely right that the suspect was innocent? What if she was wrong? As a FBI agent, she needs to follow the order or go through the right channel to voice her concern, not to go out tell the suspect that he is being watched. She should know better. What she did not only threw her own career away, but also made it more difficult for other Asian FBI agents to gain trust in the bureau.
