The librarian trifecta: a long dowdy skirt, sensible brogues, and a bun. Some nice hornrims will also speak of your dedication and decorum.

There must be something feline. A cat pin, cat print socks or turtleneck, cat earrings, cat tattoo or, perhaps, a cat meowing as your ring tone.

Don't forget a frown. God forbid you look friendly. They might start asking questions. And have your shushing finger ready. People can get downright talkative if you encourage them!

I swear part of the reason I got the job was I looked flawless and young--low-cut sleeveless top, flat front military length skirt, and red shoes.

Oh, and I was overqualified, but really young for the type of position, and local, so more affordable than the other applicants.

Don't forget the clunky jewelry.

For children's librarians, a themed jumper/sweater/sweatshirt. Something to do with the holiday coming up next on the calendar.

The perfect cat-related item for any interview is a vest.

Cat accessories show initiative, but all true librarians-to-be know that a cat-hair covered cardigan is a must!

By all means, the chunky jewelry, preferably made in a third world country. Depending on the season and your potential placement within the library, beads could be shaped like jungle animals, fruit and vegetables, tiny beach toys, religious symbols, or holiday decorations.

Ooh ooh, eschew the dominant hegemony! Wear a dress shaped like a sack, no hose, and sandals! Don't bother styling your hair! This is a LIBRARY, for Pete's sake, not a business establishment!

I love Miss E's comment as it PERFECTLY describes what I am currently wearing.

Of course, I already HAVE my job. :)

Hm. Piercings might lend that important "New Librarian" aura.

Nothing shows your dedication to children and the library like your Hermione Granger costume.

Oh, come now, all the token males in the library are gay! (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

the more embedded metal above the neckline the better. pierce every freaking visible inch of flesh and the interview will continue after I puke up my lunch.

Cleavage is key. With a nice blue and green cleavage tattoo- so people know you're serious about it.

OMG! I just learned that Clinton Kelly from "What Not to Wear" is the closing keynote speaker at the next ACRL conference. I am so doomed!

At my school library we had to wear our school uniforms, but that doesn't stop us wearing copious amounts of badges, the frizzy hair style and the the "SHHHHHHHHHH" sound perfected out.

Heh heh heh. Love this thread. Thank God (a) I'm a medical librarian (b) my salary is enough to afford cute clothes and a gym membership. I will quit if they make me wear scrubs.

Not trying to playa-hate my school/public librarian peeps. Seems like the medical lib crowd has escaped some of the stereotypes. Emphasis on "some."
