It's been my experience that one cat or dog story per day can be somewhat annoying to a co-worker. Better to avoid the entire thing, I suppose.

My library stories concerning public viewing of pornography are a heck of a lot more interesting than my husband's software engineering stories about programming running amok, thank you very much.

I would love to have co-workers quote Dr Who or Lord of the Rings as opposed to endless descriptions of their various ailments.

A good strategy... figure out which of your colleagues also have lots of cat stories. Then you can share with them freely. The only thing is that you will have to list to their cat stories too.

From the "can you top this" approach to detailed converastions about cats or personal health:

Our cat has been on 'roids for over a year now, in addition to cancer medicines!

And JUNIOR is very appreciative whenever his name surfaces in conversations amongst my fellow librarians.
