Professional courtesy, right? If you cannot get free library book fines there is no hope for those of us in library school!

I like your blog, Librarian. I work in a library, too, and though I don't have my MLS degree, I can certainly understand where you're coming from with your editorials. Good for you for not making Librarians' existences the be-all-and-end-all of humanity; too many of them think that way. You got me laughing, in any case...

When I worked in a Public Library we had a retired Librarian in her 80's who would bother the junior staff with comments like "I dont think this book should be cataloged at this number".

Most of the time she was right!

I always had time for her and made a point of finding out her reading preferences. If anything came into the library that I thought she may like, I would always reserve it for her first!

Librarians are not paid well generally and there has to be some lerks and perks to the profession.

Yes - we need to look after each other so long as professional courtesy is not abused.

At my library we change the status of the book to missing take it out as long as we want it and then return it and change the status back to normal. The books are never actually taken out on a card ;)

When I was in library school a dot of charm and general remorse got me far with this. I will admit I'm a terrible offender when it comes to over-due material... but the business librarians and I had quite the understanding...

I love the blog... fantastic job.
