Introduction | I have always loved reading and writing. Even while a baby in a high chair, I held up books and pretended to read, according to my parents. Sometimes the book was upside down, but I still seemed entertained. ** My mother loves to tell this story: When I entered kindergarten, they gave me a little paperback book that wasn't even a quarter-inch thick. Apparently I told the kindergarten teacher I wouldn't be seen carrying such a lightweight book and I showed up the next day with a hardbound volume an inch thick. ** Throughout my childhood, I wrote short stories and even plays. I would produce the plays using the neighborhood kids for actors. I even had a neighborhood newspaper that I went around and sold to the neighbors for a nickel a copy. My parents had a playhouse built for me and in it I conducted school. My mother says I convinced my friends to be the students. ** Today I live and garden in a carriage house that is nearly 200-years old. I live here with my cat Oliver. |
