About Me

I live in the ancient parish of Worth on the beautiful High Weald of Sussex. I was brought up in Cheshire (Alderley Edge and Wilmslow, the former being Alan Garner country, the latter for nearly 2000 years the resting place of Lindow Man). I graduated in English Linguistics and Spanish from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1975, and married a Geordie. Despite having lived "down south" for half my life, my heart is still in the north country and I hope to live there again one day. My main interests are reading, history, the countryside and cooking, all of which I plan to blog about here. My favourite reading is historical fiction. My favourite historical periods are Ancient Rome and the eighteenth century. I also like to read non-fictional history, biography, popular science and the English classics. My current day job is in market research but I've also been a civil servant, literacy tutor, secretary, book reviewer and editor for the Historical Novel Society and a volunteer in the ongoing excavations at the Roman fort of Vindolanda in Northumberland.
