| Introduction | 1968 was a big year for me. Swept up in a maelstrom of cultural change, I learned the fundamentals of Zen meditation, entered into a relationship with plant medicines, and began my study of astrology. As important as all three practices have been in shaping who I've become, my cultivation of astrological awareness has been the most transformational. Meditation and the medicine taught me how to live in parts of myself other than my mind. But when I needed to be in my mind, the practice of astrology taught me how to think like nature thinks, in circles and cycles, rather than in the straight lines conditioned by alphabetic literacy. Despite all its gifts, the psychology of literacy has divorced us from nature, and played a major role in creating the ecological, social, and economic crises currently engulfing us. There is a new world coming. I sincerely believe it will be shepherded into place by humans who have learned to think in ways that intentionally reverence the world rather than unconsciously exploit it.
