| Introduction | Gustavo Artiles (Caracas, Venezuela, 2 de octubre de 1931). Translator, essays writer. His main interests have always been language, belle lettres and music, but not ignoring science. Thus, his occupations have related to those fields and their popularisation through almost all media. In his native country he studied journalism and was during years a commentator on music and literature at Radio Nacional while contributing to several literary magazines. Later he became chief of production of an FM channel devoted to the arts and some years later teacher of music history in two local schools. He translated Arthur Jacob´s A short history of Western music and John Calder's The Philosophy of Samuel Beckett. He attended courses of literature and linguistics at London University. From 1976 to 1987 he was part of the staff of the Latin American Service of the BBC, in London, where he now lives and works as a freelance translator and interpreter. He is the author of a book on Shakespeare´s identity, Un engima llamado Shakespeare, published by Fondo de Cultura Económica Mexico 2004 and Spain 2005. |
