Introduction The first time I felt fat, I weighed a whopping 65 pounds. I can't remember how old I was, but that number is seared into my brain, like a brand. I was a normal sized kid, but one of my friends - a stick thin wisp of a girl - weighed 5 pounds less than I did. I seems so inconsequential now, but being fat is a state of mind as much as it is a physical state. For me, this particular state of mind became a self-fulfilling prophecy. From a very young age, I developed a very unhealthy relationship with food. Eating wasn't about nutrition; it was about shoulds and shouldn'ts, rewards and punishments. At age 22, I reached my highest weight, which was just shy of 200 pounds. This is the story of my battle to get to a place (not necessarily a weight) where I can feel good about myself.
