Introduction New blogger (since Nov 2011), design writer, former magazine editor, photographer and author of 18 books, including 15 architecture, interior design, travel and gardening books, a bestselling memoir, a lesser-known memoir and a novel about love. Avid traveller, enthusiastic collector of things (books, vintage maps, black-and-white photographs), lover of libraries, and purveyor of tales. Fond of architecture, design, old houses, French gardens, good manners, whimsy and creativity, classic movies, Manhattan, the Left Bank of Paris and people who take the time to stop and inspire others. Very bad at cooking, gardening, flying Economy Class and speaking French. Lives in a big old house with several libraries alongside her partner and two paper-devouring puppies. Interests Architecture, interior design, gardens, Italian landscapes, formal French gardens, medieval French gardens, the Chelsea Flower Show, creative ideas, interesting people, inspiring destinations, beautiful books and libraries, narratives, other people's stories, collages and journals, great conversations, appreciating the quirky, the serendipitous and the sublime, Savannah, New York and Paris, fashion and style, unusual museums and stores, enchanting villages on far-flung islands, snorkelling off those far-flung islands, travelling, walking, writing, words, TED conferences and inspiring ideas.
Favorite Movies Any film with Jack Nicholson, Sidney Poitier, Judi Dench, Marion Cotillard, or Robert Redford. (RR doesn't have to do anything; he can just stand there.) Also any period films (Atonement, Out of Africa, Howard's End), anything with a witty twist (The Thomas Crown Affair, Jean de Florette/Manon de Sources), anything romantic (Something's Gotta Give, The Lake House, The Notebook) and anything with New York, a dog and a great soundtrack in it (You've Got Mail).
Favorite Music Seventies' classics, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Neil Diamond, early Bee Gees, Boz Scaggs, The Commodores, David Gray, Dionne Warwick, John Mayer, Van Morrison. Most of it stems from my childhood journeys with my parents, listening to their tapes as we drove across Australia and the US for miles and miles on our herculean road trip holidays!
Favorite Books Architecture and design titles, gardening titles, travel guidebooks, biographies, books about designers, style icons and innovators, books about legendary explorers and travellers, classic Penguins (especially those with beautiful covers, and those the world has forgotten about), and whimsical, insightful and/or inspirational titles.
