About Me

I’m an author, a newspaper columnist and a broadcaster. Like many in my native Ireland I was raised in a Christian family, but it was a brand of Christianity that Jesus would have had difficulty in recognising. He taught that it was the freedom of love and not constraints of expectations and conformity that should be at the centre of all human relationships. So, having rejected the religion of my fathers, a long detour followed before I realised that this brand of religion – all about rules and control and manipulation, even spiritual abuse if you refused too conform, it was this brand of religion that called for Jesus’ crucifixion. These days I don’t go to church, at least not in the conventional understanding of going to church: I explain why in my Blog entitled; Three good reasons why I don’t go to church, and I can tell you that with no one to tell me what to believe and how to relate to God, my wife and I have a greater depth of freedom than we ever thought possible. It’s exactly what Paul meant when he said, ‘… Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law’ (Galatians 5:1). Try it!
