Introduction The Fixer operates a Web site at www.fixadocument.com designed to help business professionals and students improve their writing skills. Professionally, he spent 12 years in daily newspaper journalism, and 20 years as a marketing executive in education, banking and printing. He currently is Editor of the Rocky Mountain Direct Marketing Association DirectLine. As an editor and writing consultant, The Fixer knows it's OK to break a few rules – use a dash, occasionally ... or an ellipsis, to make a parenthetical point (even when your High Schoolmarm wouldn't rightly approve). Wherever you see good writing, you recognize it – in part, because it bears the undeniable mark of clarity, precision and grammatical integrity ... but in larger measure, because someone has taken the time to breathe life into the words on paper and make sure they serve their purpose well.

An AP Stylebook or Chicago Manual of Style offer guidance on style and grammar. Yet Steven King, Tom Clancy or Pat Conroy probably don't even own copies. Superb writers have a Seventh Sense that goes beyond intuition to KNOWING when a phrase is appropriately turned. Trust your Seven Senses (and learn to occasionally overrule one or more of them) and you're on your way.
