Introduction My name is Cameron Townsend. I grew up on the central coast and spent the first 21 years of my life growing up, living and playing on our family property located in Tepusquet Canyon. I did not have the conventional hobbies that most urban kids had. Though I went to school in town I spent most of my time outdoors around our property. While growing up my family would take regular trips to the national and state parks in our area, including but not limited to places such as Yosemite and Joshua Tree. From these experiences I learned from an early age the basics of camping, hiking and climbing. From there I built a solid foundation of practical knowledge in the mentioned areas.

Now a days I spend my time pursuing college and expanding my knowledge of backpacking and camping. In my down time I keep busy with hobbies such as slacklining or climbing when I have the chance. My goal in life is to become a high school teacher and outdoor club leader. I am also planning on publishing a backpacking guide for the John Muir Trail and backpacking in general. The Blog 'The Unorthodox Hiker' is my think tank and drawing board to help me approach and execute my ideas.
