Introduction The Rock Garden Project started a few years ago after my husband and I bought our first house in rural central New York. The house came with 27 acres and 10 chickens. I began learning all I could about growing vegetables and raising chickens for eggs and meat. There was plenty of space, but the soil was full of rocks. As I worked the soil, I piled the rocks into sculptures at the edges of my garden. I thought I would document how I became a self-sufficient homesteader-ish middle school Language Arts teacher. We moved. I left all that behind. We're renting and not sending our roots too deeply yet. I've recently become a mother and gardening has gotten a whole lot simpler, but a whole lot harder to do. Self-sufficiency is a shiny, glowing idea that I catch bobbing around in the rearview mirror. I have dreams of a long-term relationship with a bit of land, some market gardening, and certainly plenty of chickens. Right now, I'm building up my left biceps while I tote around a curious, gloriously chubby pork chop who snorts and laughs and squeals at the world.
